Marine Biotoxins

Marine biotoxins can accumulate in filter-feeding shellfish such as clams, mussels and oysters when they ingest toxin-producing phytoplankton, introducing those toxins to the human food chain. In addition, some toxins are released into drinking water and recreational water through natural means or cell disruption resulting from water treatment processes. Exposure or consumption of these toxins via contaminated shellfish or water may result in illness or death of humans, animals and aquatic organisms.
